Hillside’s Day Treatment programs are designed for students who experience significant challenges in school and or the community which impact their academic performance and/or social development. Our Day Treatment programs are licensed schools by the New York State Education Department and the Office of Mental Health. We provide special education programming for students who have an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Their academic and social development goals are monitored and student progress is reported regularly. The Day Treatment program includes ongoing clinical support and intensive individual group and family therapy. Students must be referred by their school district. Transportation is provided, and there is no cost to parents for any education program at Hillside.

About this Program

Any eligible student may attend one of Hillside’s Day Treatment Centers, depending on need and age. A child’s home school district’s Committee on Special Education is responsible for referring youth to Day Treatment; parents may not apply independently.

Hillside offers Day Treatment at two locations: the Crestwood Day Treatment Therapeutic Education Center (grades K-8) and the Halpern Day Treatment Therapeutic Education Center (grades 7-12).

A child admitted to Day Treatment is assigned to a 6:1:2 class (six students, one teacher and two teaching assistants) with other children of similar ages. Students benefit from individualized instruction in a New York State Education Department approved educational program. Students engage in group and individual therapy as well as planned recreation activities, all of which are tailored to meet their specific needs. To ensure that academic and social needs are effectively addressed, several of our Day Treatment classroom teachers have developed expertise in the effective engagement and education of children who are autistic or on the spectrum.

All teachers and teacher assistants are certified by the State of New York. Each child is assigned a Master’s-level therapist who provides clinical services and care coordination. The services of a psychiatrist and nurse are also available.
Day Treatment operates 215 days a year, including a six-week summer school program. Door-to-door transportation is arranged through the child’s home school district.

Active parent engagement is an expectation for youth participating in Hillside Day Treatment programs. Parents can expect to be highly involved in treatment conferences and parent-teacher meetings, and in a wide variety of family therapy and support services. An expectation for a child’s admission to Day Treatment includes the willingness of the family to participate in the overall treatment plan. In addition to regularly scheduled appointments, staff members are available to provide support in crisis situations, and to provide advocacy and transportation, if required. There is no cost to parents or guardians of students who participate in any Hillside education program.
