Home-Based Crisis Intervention (HBCI) aims to prevent psychiatric placement of a child out of the family home or ensure the successful return of a child to the family home from an out-of-home placement. Home Based Crisis Intervention workers help families alleviate the immediate crisis and improve family functioning so that the risk of placement or re-placement is reduced.

About this Program

Home Based Crisis Intervention is an intensive service designed to immediately assist families in crisis. The service is based on the nationally acclaimed Homebuilder Model. Home Based Crisis Intervention specialists assist families in stabilizing crises and preventing family disintegration.

Families are provided short-term, home-based individual and family therapy that focuses on developing coping mechanisms and practical skills. Families also work with specialists to improve communication and comprehension.

HBCI specialists are on call 24 hours a day to provide emergency assistance, and are flexible in scheduling counseling times that are convenient for the family. Our HCBI specialists use a number of counseling and educational methods in their work with families. Participants are treated as colleagues, partnering with specialists in the development of problem-solving strategies. Throughout the course of treatment families explore such areas as determining the events that led up to the crisis, stabilizing the home, keeping the family safe, and providing support for family members.

Through HBCI, families regain a sense of control, reestablish bonding, and gain empowerment. Families are taught to be assertive and act as their own advocates, as well as given tools for anger and depression management, child development, and behavior management. They are also taught how to access other community resources to ensure sustained family health. The expected duration of service is from four to six weeks, with families receiving up to 10 hours of service each week. Participation is voluntary and at no cost to the family.
