Employee Learning & Development

Once you join the Hillside team, we’re committed to helping you get the right start. Many Hillside positions require initial training to ensure each employee is prepared to meet the needs of the children, individuals and families we serve. The steps below will help you succeed.

rightSTART and Fundamentals

On the first day of employment, every employee receives a 120-day rightSTART Learning Track. This has been prepared exclusively for you, and outlines the recommended live classroom training, on-demand courses, and on-the-job learning activities that will help you ramp up into your new role.

All employees are expected to complete our three-day Hillside Fundamentals training, full-day classes that begin at 8:30am. The days must be taken in sequence, but can be split across months if necessary.

This live classroom training is offered monthly at our offices in Rochester (1 Mustard Street, Rochester, NY 14609) and Syracuse (215 Wyoming Street, Syracuse, NY 13204). You and your supervisor will determine the appropriate location, given such details as your start date and where you’re traveling from. You’ll be reimbursed for travel expenses to training, and those traveling a distance of about two hours or more each way may want to discuss the option of staying at a hotel during training rather than commuting each day. That decision will ultimately be up to the supervisor.

Role-Specific Training

Employees working in direct-care roles will also be expected to complete either Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) or Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention (SCIP). SCIP, a three-day training session, is for employees working in our Individualized Residential Alternative (IRA) group homes. It will be scheduled individually for employees who need it. All other direct-care employees will take TCI.

Those working in our residential and school settings will take a five-day course (Monday-Friday); those working in the community-based programs will take a 3-day course (Monday to Wednesday). All TCI days are scheduled from 8:30-4:30, and are offered during the week immediately following Hillside Fundamentals. TCI training days must be taken in sequence, but can be split across months when necessary.

Many positions also require CPR/First Aid/AED training, usually offered a few times each month. If required for your position, you’ll have the opportunity to register for the offering that best you’re your schedule and location. Classes are typically 8:30am to 3:00pm or 9:00am to 3:30pm.

To discuss additional specifics related to the position you are interested in, please inquire during your interview process.
