Healthy Families New York (HFNY), a home visiting program accredited by Healthy Families America, is designed to improve the health and well-being of infants and children through an array of coordinated home-based services. Participants receive support in developing positive parent-child bonding and relationships; enjoying optimal child and family health, development, and safety; improving family self-sufficiency; and avoiding instances of child abuse and neglect.
About this Program
Hillside’s HFNY program uses an evidence-based voluntary home visiting model to provide services to families that begin prenatally, or at birth, through age 5. HFNY’s infant mental health/relational development approach promotes parent-child attachment to achieve its mission of preventing child abuse, neglect, and other adverse childhood outcomes.
HFNY strategies are relationship-based, culturally sensitive, family-centered, strength-based – building on the competencies of the parent participants. HFNY home visitors develop healthy relationships with families; they are members of the same community as the program’s participants, and able to apply their shared understanding of the community’s culture to partner with parents, to better help them in responding in a sensitive and in a nurturing manner to their young children.
Comprehensive services provided by HFNY include the following:
- Working to effectively connect families with needed services and other community resources
- Supporting the prevention of child abuse and neglect through a proven evidence-based practice
- Supporting families with accomplishing personal goals such as furthering their education, finding jobs or internship opportunities
- Providing prenatal support for pregnant women, promoting an understanding of what to expect during labor and delivery, support bonding prenatally, and balancing responsibilities
- Increasing protective factors to develop a strong family by increasing parental resilience, social connections, knowledge of parenting and child development, concrete support in times of need, and improving social and emotional competence of children
HFNY was established in 1995 by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. The program is a collaboration of Healthy Families New York home visiting programs, the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, Prevent Child Abuse New York, Inc., the Center for Human Services Research of the State University of New York at Albany, and Healthy Families America.
