An article examining the community impact of a Hillside program has been published in the latest edition of Journal of Applied Juvenile Justice Services. “The Impact of an Alternative to Detention Program on Developmental Assets for Adolescents Involved in the Juvenile Justice or Legal System” was written by Hillside leaders Laura Maggiulli, PhD, LMSW, Director of Research; Jennifer Perry, BA, Program Manager; and Joan Aiello, MS, Senior Business Intelligence Analyst.
The article reports on a study on Reinvesting in Youth (RIY), a Hillside program that supports Rochester-area youth at risk for involvement in the juvenile justice system. Among RIY’s key outcomes is a measurable change in developmental assets, essential building blocks in positive youth development. Research shows a link between a youth’s developmental assets and their likelihood of avoiding high-risk behaviors – and youth who participate in RIY show a strong increase in developmental assets upon completing the program.
