You Can Make a Difference: Learn about becoming a Hillside foster parent, and start your journey today.
Since 2017, Brian DiNitto has quietly made a powerful difference in the lives of caregivers and youth. As a New York State-certified foster parent through Hillside, he provides Respite Care, welcoming youth into his home approximately two weekends each month—allowing parents and caregivers to rest and recharge, while the youth have a break that allows them to safely experience new opportunities.
A retired middle school math teacher in the City of Rochester and now a librarian with the Rochester Public Library, Brian has always believed in the power of learning. Whether in a classroom, a library, or during a respite weekend, his goal is the same: to help young people grow.
“I provide respite support for parents by giving the child one weekend a month of time-away activities,” Brian explained. “I try to give the child new experiences out in the community.”
His partner, Karen Mayes, is deeply involved in every visit. Deaf and fluent in sign language, she uses adaptive tools to communicate and helps youth learn basic sign language during their stay. “We make sure that the youth has a smooth transition to our place, by seeing that they feel at home with us from their arrival,” she shared.
Karen describes the children they welcome as a “wide range—extrovert, excitable, funny to introvert, quiet, serious.” No matter their personality, “They all enjoy having Brian’s attention and time, so they feel included and safe.”
Hillside arranges a meet-and-greet at the respite foster home to ensure the youth and family are comfortable prior to scheduling a respite. Additional supports include medication administration training and adolescent behavior courses, as well as community-building events.
“Hillside gives you the tools and support for working with the children,” Brian said. “And they are there to listen if you have difficult situations where you need advice.”
